Banquet and Reunion Weekend a Huge Success!

What a great celebration of UMass Swimming and Diving we had last weekend!

The first order of business was the second meeting of the new Friends of UMass Men’s Swimming and Diving Board. Lots of good ideas and energy highlighted the meeting and we will be moving forward with many new initiatives as the process gets rolling.

The activities started with the annual Awards Banquet which was attended by 150 swimmers, divers, parents, and alumni. Both the men’s and women’s teams celebrated excellent years and handed out their post-season awards. A full listing of award winners can be found on the UMass Athletics website. The men’s team also received their Atlantic 10 Championship award watches. This was their tenth overall title. On Friday night a handful of alumni shared memories and caught up with old friends at Joe and Liz Hebert’s cocktail party. Special thanks to Joe and Liz from the coach.

Saturday saw a great round of golf by over 50 participants. Check out the results here.

Finally things ended with the annual BBQ at the Yarworth house. What an awesome turnout as everyone came together to eat, drink, and reminisce. The Men’s program was able to raise over $25,000 in pledges and matching gifts to the program! A truly remarkable effort and special thanks to all the Board members and alumni who stepped up to support us.

A group of the women’s alumnae got together with an initial meeting to establish a women’s board as soon as possible. Keep your eyes and ears open so you can get involved as this starts up.

Sick of paying high prices for tickets to Fenway? Never been to Orioles Park at Camden Yards? Want to hang out with some of the coolest UMASS Alumni ever? Then come on down to Baltimore for the weekend of May 31-June 1. The Red Sox will in town to take on the O's Friday-Sunday. Owen Scollan, will be happy to host a mid-day BBQ on May 31 at his home in historic South Baltimore, just blocks from the ballpark. After the cookout, it's an easy 10 minute walk (or pub-crawl) to Camden Yards.

We apologize for the short notice, and unfortunately can't assist with travel or lodging, but if you're interested please reply to Owen Scollan by Friday, May 9. After we get a solid headcount, Owen will attempt to purchase a block of tickets this weekend, leaving 3 weeks to make travel plans. More details on the tickets and pre-game BBQ will follow via e-mail as the weekend nears.

Here is a link to many popular hotels in Baltimore's Inner Harbor to assist with your planning:

I hope many of you can make it!
